The population in the Galle Fort World Heritage City has declined during the past few years according to the latest census statistics. The population of 1,589 persons in 2009 has decreased to 961 people.
Galle Heritage Foundation chairman Parakrama Dahanayake attributed it to amplified land and property purchases by foreigners within the pristine citadel during the past few years. The people who had sold their properties for exorbitant prices have changed their residences to other locations.
According to the latest statistics, out of the total population, 402 are males while 550 are females. There are 472 Islam followers and 479 Buddhists with 19 Hindus and 15 Roman Catholics. Remaining residents are of various other faiths.
As per ethnicity, the majority is Lankan Moors totaling up to 472 people. About 465 Sinhalese, 17 Sri Lankan Tamils and seven Indian Tamils are residing in the fort.
