TANWEER ACADEMY

The need of the hour is Daees, who are proficient in Sinhalese Language. We felt it very badly during the short spell, when few of the Bikhus belonging to the majority community took the law into their hands tarnishing the image of Islam with all sorts of incorrect information. This, in my opinion, the Muslims has failed to utilize the Sinhala Language fully, to propagate Islam to the Majority community.  We have limited books in Sinhala on basic Islam. Till recently the Tafseer of holy Quran was not available to public. The little Islam the majority community has picked up from associations with Muslims. Hence it is our duty to identify an Academy that will train the Alims in Sinhala Language. They should not only conversant in religious affairs they should be taught all other subjects including, Accountancy, IT Management and Public Speaking

It was Allah’s grace that we had an opportunity to drop by at the Tanweer Academy, in Thihariya after attending the function at Islamic Handicapped School, on 21st April 2013, with ZAM Refai Hadjiar accompanied by the Director A L M Ibrahim M.A. It is at the initial stages and has potential to produce Diploma and higher Diploma in Sinhala Medium GCE (A) Level, Alim Certificate from the Ministry of Education, Sri Lanka and also Bachelor of Arts degree external. Hence it is the ideal set up the community is looking for. We noticed even though a two storey building is under construction, facilities for the students are still lacking. On inquiring Mr Ibrahim mentioned there is an adjoining land of about forty perches and they are prepared to sell it to the Academy.  Mr Refai, having seen the opportunity he immediately offered to buy the land for them. This will enable the Management to draw proper Master Pan and develop accordingly.

This takes me back to seventies when Naleemiah was started by Naleem Hadjiar. There the medium of instruction was Tamil and today well qualified Alims in Tamil are being produced. It is the same concept but Tanweer Academy will be in Sinhala Language. It started in October 2008 with few students and full fledged Sinhala Medium Al Alim (Sharia) was in inaugurated in May 2009. First batch of 19 students were enrolled and hoping to enroll 30studens every year

The community should join hands and promote the Academy as it is the need of the hour and has great potential in the future, Insha Allah. The Academy had done extremely well in the 2011 GCE(A) level in Sinhala Medium, 17 out of 18 had passed all subjects.

Their vision to develop the Sinhala Medium educated Muslim youths as a role model of Muslim Youth who will practice Islam following the Quran and Sunnah of Prophet Muhammed Salallahu Alaihiwasallam and strive to improve the understanding of Islam and remove misconceptions from the minds of both communities to coexist peacefully and contribute to the development of our motherland Sri Lanka.
