Muslim Humanitarian Issues – Sri Lanka

Little is it known that the Muslims of the North and East of Sri Lanka have paid a heavy price for their commitment to a united Sri Lanka. They have been massacred in the thousands, expelled from their homes and dispossessed of their lands by the Tamil Tiger militants over the course of two decades of war. Despite the end of the war in 2009, nothing much has been done to alleviate their plight. They are in reality The Forgotten People of Sri Lanka. Many continue to languish in refugee camps in miserable conditions and are not in position to go back to their homes as many of their lands and houses continue to be occupied by Tamils settled there by the LTTE. To reclaim their lands they need financial and legal support which is not forthcoming from either the government or NGOs.

Here we feature a Handbook to understand Muslim Grievances in Sri Lanka, Register of Muslim Lands Forcibly Occupied by Tamils in the Eastern Province and Registers of Lands, Properties and Houses of Muslims forcibly displaced by the LTTE in the Northern Province. A Situation Report on the Muslims who were affected by the 2004 Tsunami is also given here as many of the problems they face have yet to be resolved.

All of these documents have been painstakingly compiled by M.I.M.Mohideen over the past two decades and is presented here for our viewers to understand the true situation these people face. The registers particularly are eye-opening as they document each and every case of land dispossession many of these folk have yet to reclaim. It is our hope that the publication of this material in our website will arose greater interest in the plight of this much neglected segment of society.
